The main aim of this paper is to find out the role of woman in rural housing.

Key words : Rural Housing, women, Construction

Introduction :

The main aim of this paper is to find out the role of women in rural housing. The major emphasis is thus to identify the various type of work performed by rural woman. The first part of the paper deals with rural housing. This section is an in depth  study of the conditions of rural houses in India and Identification of those problems which are direct consequence of poorly designed and constructed houses. The second and also the most important part of the paper deals with the role of women in Rural Housing. Most of the physical labor required for house building is contributed by women but unfortunately the living quarts of women are poorly constructed as in relation to the well ventilated and spacious baithaks or in other words chaipal which are mainly the living quarters of men. In rural it is unheared of a women being asked of how  her house is to be constructed and where her kitched should be women by making their male counter parts in understanding their needs and thereby designing the house to fulfill their requirements to the utmost.

Rural Housing :

India is an agricultural country most of the houses in the Rural areas are in a dilapidated condition. They need repair or reconstruction. Most of the houses. In the rural area are made up of Earth, straw. Thatches etc. and with no provision for lavatories or bathrooms. Kithcer is mostly in the corner  of any room in the house or it it outside the house. In most of the villages women have to walk great distances and also stand in queue for water.

Role of women in Rural Housing :

A rural women plays significant and an important role in rural housing. Home making according to ___ is a multifaced task  particularly in the rural area. It involves collection of material, preparation and its effective occupation. In ll these stages women are involved. After construction, the responsibility of maintenance is exclusively on the shoulders of the  women. Upreti states that house maintenance requires sufficient knowledge of its socio-economic cultural and various other aspects women in villages according to him play an important role in home making and also in maintaining the rural living environment. According to him, women Architects, Engineers, Builders and Town planners should pay their attention towards the basic needs of women in Rural housing.

Different organization including state governments have lately come up with the issue of women and Rural housing. Government of India has given much important to a women. During the recent years, weaker sections house path as are being issued in the name of “House wife” only. This therefore encourages a woman to take part in all matters of construction right from excavation work till the completion of the house. When one’s wife is working any sensible rural husband will not keep silent and he will give maximum assistance. The National Housing Policy (NHP) gives priority to women headed house hold and windows.

Since  a women in rural ara does most of the work in construction of her house and its maintenance, she should be encouraged to include the following points so that her house work would became less time consuming and less tedious. Besides this literacy campaigns should be encouraged  by the government  of each state so that women can realize the importance of time and thus emphasize on proper construction of well designed houses. And thereby saving her time for some productive occupations.

Remedies for better Rural Housing  :

  1. Every house should have a proper Kitchen, Bathroom. Laterine and store room.
  2. The kitchen should be very spacious since a rural woman has to do all kinds of work in it. It should also have a proper chimney for the outlet of the smoke.
  3. Small cupboards or shelves in kitchen and rooms can help women to store things properly.
  4. The walls of the house should be covered with non-erodible mud plaster and the roofs should be covered properly with straw, palm three leaves or other local materials available for thatching in order to reduce her lablur wasted on repair and maintenance.
  5. In most of the rural houses one finds that the area outside the house is neglected. Looking after the cattle and cleaning the palce where the cattle stand is quite difficult. These extra work can be reduced of proper shed is made for the cattle. By using non-erodable plaster for flooring. The floor of a cattle shed can be easily washed since. It is the woman  who does all there things. She has to take keen interest in designing her house to gain the maximum benefit out of it.
  6. Women organizations can help in awaking the rural women. The government on its part should set up Gobar Gas Plants in every village. Then there would be no need for women to walk great distances to collect wood for fule.

Conclusion :

Women play a vital role in all kinds of work in rural areas. Traditional women have been contributing even in the construction of the houses. Modern women’s role should be not only in construction but also in designing. Once the house is constructed properly. Design in such a manner to gain maximum utility then living environment would improve considerably. A clean and spacious house would keep away diseases and there would be health for all. Besides this, it would reduce a Rural women’s monotonous and tough house work to a minimum and thereby  conserving  her time and energy for other purposes .
